Sergei Donatovich Dovlatov (1941–1990) is a well-known Russian writer, whose books, translated into many languages, gained popularity all over the world. Dovlatov’s narrative Pushkin Hills (1983) is rightly considered to be one of the most significant works by the author. It is a brilliant literary work — profound and realistic, and also a unique model of style and masterly prose. As in many other books by Dovlatov the main character of this work is the author himself, who had to work at the Museum of A. S. Pushkin “Mikhailovskoye” in 1976–1977. The plot was inspired by a chain of events and particular situations and by the writer’s reminiscences of his past experience. The money, his wife, his creative work and the political basis of the state – these are the most important problems the main character has to deal with at present. However, these same problems were urgent for the poet who lived in the settlement “Mikhailovskoye“ about two centuries ago. Dovlatov is justly regarded as the master of a dialogue which is characterized by precision and unexpected turning of the thought. His prose has the merit of simplicity, and his narration is marked by the power to stimulate the imagination of the reader. The reader of the book is given a chance to get acquainted with Russian literature in English. The new edition is supplied with comments and vocabulary.
