This collection of eighty-seven classic English fairy tales collected in the 1890s by scholar and folklorist Joseph Jacobs is deliberately directed at young listeners. The best-known fairy tales today are often those of European origin, but England has its own rich folk tradition. Though some stories such as 'Tom Thumb' and 'The Three Little Pigs' have been much anthologized, and 'Jack and the Beanstalk', and 'Dick Whittington' are familiar from the pantomime, there are many others that are barely known at all. Some are English variants of European stories such as 'Rushen Coatie' (a version of 'Cinderella'), 'Mr Fox' ('Bluebeard') and 'The Well of the World's End' ('The Frog Prince'); others are uniquely native creations - to name but a few, the very nasty 'Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh', the comic 'Wee Wee Mannie' from Scotland and the weirdly fantastic 'King of the Cats' .
