Stevenson's classic adventure story for boys (but girls like it too!), once read, is never forgotten. A shiver goes down the spine as the ominous tap of a walking stick announces the approach of Blind Pew; with Billy Bones we shudder in dread at the mere thought of the terrible Black Spot; we share the terror of Jim Hawkins, hidden on the deck of the Hispaniola in an apple barrel, overhearing the plotting of the mutineers. Treasure Island launched the genre of pirate stories for children which is still very much alive today, inventing the archetypal pirate captain in the sinister one-legged Long John Silver, complete with parrot on shoulder. But Stevenson's story has a sutble moral ambiguity that few of its successors have ever achieved, and it is Silver, with more courage and ingenuity than many of the 'good' characters, who comes over as the story's true hero. Published in 1883,Treasure Island had to wait until 1949 to find an artist exactly fitted to it. Mervyn Peake's imagination had been stirred by the book in childhood and his tense, eerie, dramatic black and white illustrations capture all the fear, evil and unexpected humour of the narrative.
